Roofing Glossary of Terms
Single Ply Membrane-
TPO Membrane – Thermoplastic PolyOlefin is a Single Ply roofing membrane most often used in low slope and flat roof applications.
PVC Membrane – PolyVinyl Chloride is a Single Ply roofing membrane most often used in commerical low slope or flat applications,
EPDM Membrane – Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer
Mechanically Attached – A method of securing the roofing membrane, base and/ or insulation to the roof substrate or decking via metal fasteners, screws and plates.
Fully Adhered – A method of securing the roofing membrane and/ or insulation to the roof substrate or decking via applied liquid adhesives. This can be combined with mechanical fastening in order to provide additional warranty coverage from the manufacturer or to provide a more secure attachment. This is often recommended in areas where higher wind may be expected or where the height of the roof exceed a minimum threshold. Fully adhered is often the method of choice for securing membrane sheet seam laps for an EPDM membrane, but may also be specified for use in all single ply membranes.
